Learn More About Meeting Formats

Do you remember the descriptions of the various meeting options from the previous page? Thought so.

What do we mean by meeting format? We are not talking about the topic of the meeting (Step, Beginners, Big Book), but how the meeting is presented. There are several options:

Hybrid Meeting People attending in-person or logging in on Zoom would participate in the same meeting.

This could take a few different forms. At the high-end it might look something like North Brooklyn Recovery:
- The speaker sits at a table in front of a laptop to address both the Zoom participants and the fellows in the room
- There is a large monitor so that everyone in the room can see the folks in the squares.
- A centrally located microphone picks up comments around the room, while speakers attached to a laptop allow the Zoomers to be heard.
Brooklyn Central has a more modest set-up:
- The speaker sits with a tablet and addresses the fellows in the room and in the squares.
- When sharing, in-person participants connect to Zoom on their phones or sit at the table
- Another variation might be to pass the tablet around the way some meetings pass the microphone.

Parallel Meetings. Two meetings happening at the same time but that do not intersect. Zoom meeting would continue independently of the in-person meeting.

Alternate Day A temporal twist on Parallel meetings. For example we could meet in-person Monday-Wednesday-Friday and on Zoom Tuesday-Thursday.

In-Person GMS would meet in-person only. Zoom meetings would cease.

Status Quo. We would continue to meet on Zoom for the foreseeable future. If there is renewed interest in a Monday to Friday in-person meeting, the search could continue, until we can locate a site that can accommodate our group, technical requirements and budget.

Weigh the Pros & Cons

It's not a question of 'better' or 'worse.' It's a trade-off between the advantages and disadvantages of each option.

Format	Pro	Con
Hybrid	Unity Hybrid meetings offer all of the benefits – and none of the drawbacks – of all of the other options. Specifically, a hybrid meeting will help promote group unity, allowing local and far-flung fellows to share the experience, strength and hope. Service More opportunities for service!	Complexity Hybrid meetings would be the most technologically challenging option. Although a hybrid meeting might require an investment in hardware and/or additional overhead for a broadband Internet connection, our Treasurer has assured us that we have enough money in our prudent reserve to cover these initial costs. Service While our local daily meeting chairs could continue their service commitments, our remote hosts may need to step down. We would then need to replace those trusted servants and devise a protocol to coordinate in-person and online participation. We would also need to fill positions for set-up, clean-up, literature and possibly hospitality.

Ex-Pats to Exiles Our out-of-town fellows (who constitute a plurality of our membership) would have to find a new morning meeting. Zoom contineus to introduce us to a host of fellows we might not otherwise have met.

Status Quo	An Easier Softer Way No effort required to continue business as usual.	Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing While Zoom served a vital purpose during the pandemic, it is a far cry from the experience of an in-person meeting.
